Many of Gstaad’s best restaurants are tucked within upscale hotels. Here are three restaurants of our favorites.
Many of Gstaad’s best restaurants are tucked within upscale hotels. You’ll find a casual pizza spot and a popular Indian restaurant (Mango) on the promenade, but for more high-end menus combined with professional service and elevated ambience, it’s best to dine where wealthy visitors spend the night.
Monti » A lush garden terrace and extravagant meat, cheese and dessert trolleys

The contemporary Alpina Gstaad, one of our recommended hotels in town, has several appealing restaurants, including Japanese and traditional Swiss options. But chef Martin Göschel presides over two of the property’s standouts: his Michelin-starred namesake and his newest venture, Monti, which opened in late 2024. At Monti, Göschel presents prime meats and fresh fish prepared at your table and designed for sharing. The old-fashioned chalet-style interior features handcarved wooden details and rustic-chic lighting, yet the convivial see-and-be-seen terrace, set amid lush gardens, was clearly the place to be in summer. I selected the beef tenderloin, cut to my preferred size, with a green-peppercorn sauce, while my travel companion opted for the sole meunière, expertly filleted before us. The side dishes of lusciously creamy mashed potatoes, maple-glazed vegetables and garlic-butter spinach were equally delectable. The multitiered cheese cart was tempting, but it was the dessert trolley that shattered our resistance. The extravagant hazelnut-chocolate torte, drizzled with cherry brandy, was worth every calorie.

The Mansard Rooftop » Uninterrupted Alpine views from a rooftop perch above Gstaad’s promenade

Just down the street from the Gagosian Gallery and next to the impressive Würzbar, Fiedler & Co. spice emporium, The Mansard has 29 rooms that feel more functional than charming. But we weren’t there to stay; we were there to experience the Mansard Rooftop, billed as Gstaad’s only open-air rooftop bar. The restaurant’s terrace wraps around the building, affording storybook views of the snow-capped Alps, the town’s chalets and green pastures dotted with sheep. The international menu puts fresh produce at the forefront. Our waitress recommended the summer salad starter, a balanced mix of local green beans, asparagus, tomatoes, cucumbers and pickled red onions, followed by flavorful dumplings of braised pork, duck and chicken and truffle. Certain other restaurants in town may have more interesting food than this year-round hot spot, but the combination of scenery, sun and seasonally inspired fare encouraged us to linger. Inside, the sleek and minimalist dining room, anchored by a glass-enclosed central fireplace, provides a convivial setting for winter visitors.

Haute Brasserie » Exemplary Italian cuisine, romantic indoor-outdoor dining

A 15-minute walk from Gstaad’s main promenade, Haute Brasserie shines as the star of the Ultima Hotel Gstaad. The restaurant has an effortless elegance, with clean contemporary lines, muted tones, rustic wooden ceilings, moody lighting and well-spaced tables that create a sense of privacy and calm. A temperature-controlled, glass-enclosed terrace sits within a lush garden, offering a lovely setting to enjoy hearty Italian cuisine made with regionally sourced ingredients. My spaghetti, served in a rich seafood bisque with generous lobster pieces and confit cherry tomatoes, was deeply satisfying. The side of green beans in pesto added freshness and welcome crunch. Shortly thereafter, the veal chop for two, prepared cordon bleu style — filled with ham and Swiss cheese and rolled into a breaded roulade — arrived at the table beside us. Our neighbors’ satisfied expressions made it clear that it tasted as good as it looked.
